Construction Math: Cubic Yards

Calculating cubic yards helps to determine the amount of materials like concrete, sand, gravel, or dirt required for your project.

Calculating cubic yards

First, measure the dimensions:

Here’s how you calculate it:

Find the length, width, and height of the area. Make sure all measurements are in the same unit (feet, inches, or yards).

Next calculate the volume:

This is the formula:

Volume = Length x Width x Height

Here’s an example using feet:

If you have a space that is 30 feet long, 15 feet wide, and 6 feet high, the calculation would be:

Volume = 30 feet x 15 feet x 6 feet = 2,700 cubic feet

To convert cubic feet to cubic yards, divide by the total by 27 (since there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard):

2,700 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 100 cubic yards

In summary, calculating cubic volume is key for estimating material needs in construction and landscaping. By following the simple steps outlined above, you can confidently tackle any volume calculation task, ensuring you have the right amount of materials without excess or shortage.
