Tempered Glass 101

Tempered glass is a type of safety glass that is processed through a thermal or chemical treatment to increase its strength compared to regular glass.

The tempering process involves heating the glass to a very high temperature and then rapidly cooling it, which creates surface compression and internal tension, resulting in a glass that is significantly stronger than untreated glass.

In residential windows, tempered glass is often used in areas where there is a higher risk of breakage or where safety is a concern. Some common locations where tempered glass may be required by building codes include:

1/ Doors: Glass doors, such as patio doors or entry doors, often use tempered glass to reduce the risk of injury in case of breakage.

2/ Large windows: Windows that are larger in size or closer to the floor are more susceptible to impact, so they may use tempered glass for added safety.

3/ Bathroom windows: Windows in bathrooms are typically required to use tempered glass due to the increased risk of breakage from accidental impacts.

Cost:

Tempered glass does tend to cost more than regular glass due to the additional manufacturing process involved. However, the added safety benefits and durability may justify the higher cost, especially in areas where safety regulations require its use.

Appearance and Strength:

-In terms of appearance, tempered glass typically looks the same as regular glass and can be transparent or tinted depending on the homeowner’s preference.

-The strength of tempered glass comes from the compressive stress on its surface and the tensile stress in its interior, which allows it to withstand greater force and impact without shattering into sharp, dangerous shards like regular glass would. Instead, tempered glass breaks into small, relatively harmless fragments when subjected to significant force, reducing the risk of injury.
